Why routines matter
Research consistently shows that children cope better with learning tasks when expectations are clear, consistent, and predictable. When homework happens in a set way, at a set time, with a set structure, the brain spends less energy on what comes next and more energy on the task itself.
The 3-step homework routine we recommend
A calm routine doesn't remove challenge, it removes unnecessary stress.
1. Reset before you begin (5–10 minutes) No child transitions well straight from school to homework. Offer a short reset: a snack, movement, quiet play, or connection time. This helps the nervous system settle so learning can happen.
2. Same place, same order, same expectations Choose one homework spot and follow the same sequence each day (for example: read, then do written work and finally packing their bag for the next day). Predictability reduces resistance.
3. Adult presence before independence Sit nearby at the start. Your calm presence helps your child regulate and organise themselves. Independence grows after regulation not before it.
A gentle reminder
Homework is not meant to measure parenting or your child's obedience. It's meant to practise skills, and skills develop at different rates.
If your child:
-
avoids homework
-
melts down quickly
-
needs constant reminders
-
works far below their ability at home
These are often signs of emotional dysregulation or learning load challenges, not a lack of effort.
When homework feels consistently hard
If homework continues to feel overwhelming despite a clear routine, it may be a sign that your child needs targeted support, not more pressure.
Homework isn't a test of parenting, and it isn't a measure of your child's effort or character. When it feels hard, it's often telling us that the load is too heavy or the support needs to look different. What matters most is protecting the relationship, reducing pressure, and helping your child build skills at their own pace.
This month, keep it simple. One routine. One calm adult. One step at a time.
Warmly, The Aldeia Team
